I have been particularly busy at work for the past couple of weeks.
My hours are increasing bit by bit and it has been hard to get used to it. Normally I like to work about 25 hours each week but now it is heading for 35 and more.
I know, I know. What is the big deal about working a 35 hour week these days. But for me, well, working too many hours is something I have to work up to mentally and physically.
I get home from work, make dinner for husband and son, get changed for exercise, go to exercise, get home and then make my dinner and then I may make a cake and then plonk. Lately, I seem to have been doing NOTHING but that little routine and the other day I thought to myself it was getting a bit annoying that my blogging time has been eaten into.
But today I had a day off. Went to the hairdressers in the morning and spent three and a half hours there whilst she did my hair. The day was warm and after leaving the hairdressers I mosied around and enjoyed the sunshine. That was enough to make me feel relaxed and at ease.
During this week I had made up my mind to change my hair colour. Maybe go grey even. Like an Emmy Lou Harris kind of grey. I mean, my hair is 95% grey under that lovely brown colour I currently have. As I started going grey early, it was been at least twenty years that I have been having my hair coloured. I looked at the grey roots the other day and they are almost white. What do I look like under there? Is going grey really that bad?
I cannot say that my hairdresser was too pleased about my thoughts and came up with some very good ideas which would let me grow out the grey without looking like a skunk and without compromising the condition of my hair. Lots of low lights amongst the grey. She has given me her word that if I start to look old she will tell me. I would listen to her as I trust her judgement completely.
The bottom line is, I want a change with my hair. Different look. New look.
Tonight I had swimming lesson number three and we went to the deep end. Talk about being out of my comfort zone. I would not let go of the "noodle" flotation device for ages. I was so tired after the swim. This week I had four nights straight of exercise and my body just groaned at having to put more effort in. Tomorrow morning I have a fitness test and then a day of rest.
I don't really even have any plans for the weekend. Just taking things as they come. Surgery is next week so I am just mentally chilling out as it gets closer.
This is one of those particularly boring posts.
But I like to record it anyway.
Even boring posts are valid.

12 Squeaks:
when one pushes the limits of one's self, there will be down periods and routines seem confining. This to will pass.
I promise not noodle/needle, you about your swimming!
RJ: Need downs to appreciate the ups.
No noodling.
I'm sure you would look beautiful no matter what color your hair is, but no matter what, for women, grey hair instantly packs ten years onto us.
You are WAY too youthful yet to wear such a shroud of age.
Just my thoughts. I'm sure your hairstylist would heartily agree with me. We don't just color people's hair for the money... We do it to keep our friends (favorite clients) looking and feeling their best.
I think its something you should try if you want to, but it will take forever and ever to achieve. Like a year or so.
Hope the surgery goes well, and you are back on your feet in no time. I'll be thinking about you.
Karen: Yes, she did have the same opinion. And she did say to expect the next year to be more work. AND to expect to really find it hard for the next few months. But to tough it out because it would be worth it (not grey, but lighter).
I can do it.
Surgery will be quick and easy compared to last year. An enforced rest. Thank you for thinking of me.
Linda,
I would not say "boring". I would say "eventful", not necessarily fun eventful obviously. You have a lot going on and a lot of adjustments that can be made.
I agree with your salonist about the grey. You are beautiful as you are. The grey might add on years that you don't deserve. You take really good care of yourself.
As for your exercising, you did a lot, above and beyond. My hats off to you. I truly struggle with exercising. THis week I'm having pain symptoms again and unable to exercise. The symptoms can last a few days to a few weeks.
Be proud of your ability to exercise, your desire and determination. You will hurt a little bit, but you will be glad you did it. Do as I do, take a long hot bath with bubbles and candles...or a hot show. Then curl up in a fluffy robe or pj's and relax.
I bit you well with your surgery. I'm sure all with be fine :). We are all sending positive thoughts and good prayers.
Cow snorting quietly at Linda hanging onto the noodle for dear life.
(no no Cow is laughing WITH you, not at you (snortle-snort-giggle)
Moo!
Presious: Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me for surgery. It is a nice feeling that others are thinking of me. Very comforting.
Hmmm, yes, I am going to rethink the grey and just go lighter nice and slowly. See how it turns out.
I am sorry you are having a difficult time at the moment - I know the pain can be very random and last for a short or long time, very unpredictable. Hopefully it will pass soon.
I ended up taking a day off exercise today. Sometimes a break is good. I don't want to be doing too much before Wednesday. Wind down a bit.
And a long hot bath is on the agenda.
Topiary Cow: Despite the girl saying the thin blue noodle could hold my weight, I also felt compelled to grab the lane dividers now and then.
It was funny.
Apparently they have noodle lounges and chairs now.
Probably not much good in teaching swimming but excellent for snoozing on...
Good luck with the surgery next week!
First, let me start out by stating that I am a male and probably don't understand the intricacies of pyschology connected with women's opinions about gray hair adding years onto one's appearance.
But I have always thought that certain women looked beautiful, and NOT older than their actual age, with gray hair. It all depends on the person. I think that you are one of those women who would look beautiful with gray hair.
I have seen many middle-aged women with dyed hair that looked like they were trying too hard to look young, which in fact made them look OLDER than they actually were.
This is even more evident when MEN do this. Or when they wear a "rug". I mean, who are they fooling? The results are usually pathetic.
I know that our society equates youth with beauty. It's a shame, really, that women have been placed in the position of having to slather on makeup, shave body-hair, color their hair, wear uncomfortable high-heels, etc. in order to feel "attractive".
You are a very attractive person from the inside out. Whatever you do will be fine. I think it's great that you're swimming! :)
Anna: Ha ha, I would be climbing all over them. They would be great in a pool with the sun shining high in the sky.
Cameron: Thanks for the encouragment. I keep looking at this website dedicated to women who want to go grey (websites for everything these days) and it is very appealing. But a slow process.
Now, men that colour their hair look wrong. It always looks orange or fake. We have some male news presenters who now colour their grey hair with a darker grey.
When it comes to maintaining myself, I draw the line at fake tans, pedicures, manicures, facials and high heels. I remember years ago thinking that it seemed over the top and costly and very time consuming.
Grey hair is a strange area when it comes to aging. I see some women with grey that look great and others that have brillo hairstyles. I guess it would have made no difference the colour of their hair, some women look good because they know what they need to do to look stylish.
I just do not want to get to an age where my dark hair is actually aging me and then have to start going lighter. That would be worse.
Wow--Cameron has an interesting take on gray hair. I don't think most men feel that way. I'm more with Karen--I think gray instantly ages a person. Like you, I'm about 90% gray in real life and am a slave to the bottle every three weeks. It's worth it, though. While I agree that EmmyLou has always looked beautiful, I'm afraid I'd look more like Jamie Leigh Curtis, and honestly, I think she looks much older than her years.
Good luck with the surgery, Linda. I'll be sending positive healing vibes your way! XOXO
Linda Lou: Well, you could go for the Barbara Bush style.
Yes, that grey is a hard one. Good grey hair takes lots of work and you cannot have a day of rest or you will look like brillo head. Plus, if you dress down one day the grey hair will not look right. It is a whole package.
Thanks for the healing vibes.
